Innovation in Safety
Pioneering new approaches to system safety analysis and design.
We’re dedicated to the practical application of systems approaches.
Our History
STAMP Institute was founded by Dr. John Thomas, a leading authority in system safety and a co-developer of STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis) alongside Prof. Nancy Leveson at MIT.
With roots in systems theory and decades of research at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, STAMP Institute brings MIT-level rigor to organizations worldwide. Our mission is to transform how industries approach safety, security, and reliability through modern, proven methods.
From aerospace and automotive to healthcare and energy, we’ve helped organizations across every sector build safer, more reliable systems.
“We’re committed to bringing MIT-level rigor and real-world experience to every organization we work with.”
— Dr. John Thomas, Founder
We are committed to advancing system safety, security, and reliability worldwide through modern, scientifically grounded methods. We go beyond teaching process steps to help professionals identify the critical gaps in traditional safety models and master the cutting-edge solutions needed to bridge them. We empower organizations to build complex systems that people can trust.
What We Do
We emphasize the latest generation of approaches, especially those enabled by the STAMP accident model, to ensure the most powerful and cost-effective solutions for preventing losses before they occur.

Leadership

Founder & Lead Instructor
Dr. John Thomas is an instructor at MIT and the co-developer of STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis), one of the most widely adopted modern hazard analysis techniques. His work spans aerospace, automotive, healthcare, defense, and energy sectors as well as many other high-risk industries.
With over two decades of experience in system safety, Dr. Thomas has trained thousands of engineers and safety professionals worldwide. His instrumental research has been adopted by over 80 organizations, including NASA, the FAA, and major automotive manufacturers.

Director, Strategy and System Security Engineering/Cybersecurity
Dr. William “Dollar” Young, Jr. is an accomplished strategist and technical leader in electronic warfare. He recently retired from the U.S. Air Force after commanding the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, delivering advanced electromagnetic capabilities and missionware across the service.
As the creator of STPA-Sec and FMA-C, Dr. Young developed frameworks used to secure the nation’s most complex systems, and he was a key contributor to NIST 800-160. He is currently an Associate Research Professor at Syracuse University and a member of DARPA’s ISAT Study Group, specializing in secure systems engineering and AI risk.
