Proactive Analysis
STPA
System-Theoretic Process Analysis
A powerful hazard analysis technique that identifies potential loss scenarios before they occur, enabling proactive design of safety controls.
Learn STPAA Center for Learning in System Safety and Security
We teach innovative systems-thinking approaches like STPA and CAST, help organizations apply them, and offer free beginner resources for anyone learning them. Led by Dr. John Thomas, co-author of the STPA Handbook.

See if STAMP captures the problems you’re facing. Then see results from industry and whether industry leaders found it worth the effort.
The Methods
STAMP is a model of how losses happen in complex systems. STPA and CAST are two analysis methods built on it: STPA is used before a loss, and CAST after a loss.

About Us
Dr. John Thomas founded STAMP Institute and leads its teaching. He is an instructor at MIT and a leading authority on system safety engineering. He has trained thousands of professionals worldwide and consulted with major organizations across aerospace, automotive, energy, healthcare, and other high-risk industries.

Going Further
We also teach professional classes, and we work alongside teams applying STPA and CAST to their own systems.
Self-paced learning for professionals seeking to master STPA and CAST methods at their own pace.

About project supportFrom Past Classes
“I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to follow the class due to the fact that I had no experience in safety. However, the class explained the method in a very intuitive way. From my point of view, this class is an A+.”
“The examples are really driving home the point. They are relevant, and the findings are really interesting, even to those of us with a lot of experience in safety.”
“For me, having already attempted to apply STPA on [our] systems earlier this year, the class was very useful for me to understand how to think using STAMP and the foundations that were covered early on in the class.”
